THE SCREAM
(Skrik,
or The Cry 1893)
is an
expressionistic
painting by
Norwegian artist
Edvard Munch.
The agonized
figure against
the yellow -red
sky has been
said to
symbolize
humanity
overwhelmed by
existential
angst. He
painted the sky
and landscape in
Oslo,
Norway when
it suddenly
turned blood
red. In
his diary wrote,
"I sensed an
infinite scream
passing through
nature".
It is thought
that a powerful
volcanic
eruption in
Karakatoa that
year created the
heavenly
phenomena.
Somehow, I think
we can all
relate to the
emotion we see
in the figure.
I decided to
transpose my own
artform figure
into the
apparently
unbearable
circumstances
and the emotion
comes through.
